@Creative Sphere
Incredible work guys!!
A toast to the three of you and the franchise's success.
Looking forward to seeing more subtled Macross films and projects in the future.
If you need an extra pair of hands or eyes, just ring me up = P

really weird criteria. If they "Swore" in Japanese then the subs should have profanity. And "make it like a Hollywood movie" is a frightening sentence by any measure.

I'm most surprised that they let Gwyn anywhere near anything. Yeah, he's contributed news across the years but he's also actively pushed people away from the fandom through his facebook group by Gatekeeping, being elitist, and deleting posts from people who got Macross-related news before he did.

I'm still shocked at seeing anything Macross related other than the original series and Plus being released in the US. Can't wait to see even more come out over here

This was a fascinating read! Makes me want to break out my imported d Shudisuta b blu-ray set and re-watch the movies tonight. And then go see the upcoming movie screenings in the theaters.

Macross is extremely musically themed and inspired. I wonder if there's any chance of the entries getting dubbed and released on home video.

Reading this, I was thinking how it's really been awhile since we got a new Macross series. Then all of a sudden I realized I was thinking about Macross Frontier and totally forgot we had Macross Delta.

Holy shit, I have this exact set-I had zero problems importing it from japan as I purchased it "second hand" from a resaler (although condition wise it looked brand new). The 2 art books are fantastic and are worth the price of the set alone. I think I paid maybe $60 for my set. As for the tv series I have it subbed on bluray (home made on bd50 blanks). I won't say where I got the raw japanese bluray files from but I did use heavily modified fansubs. Needless to say I love Macross Frontier and am going to see the first movie at a nearby theater later this month.

I hope we can get a Bluray and dub here later on. I can't make either screening.

Sounds like you're the one gatekeeping if you think that 'make it like a Hollywood movie' (i.e make it more accessible to the mainstream) is 'frightening'. Also, sure is easy to attack someone from behind a screen-name, when at least Gwyn is right there, real name and real face and all. He'd likely not deign to respond so I'll do it in his place.

Unless you're willing to provide evidence that Gwyn is somehow not doing good things for the franchise with this push to get more Macross into the Western sphere legitimately and professionally, please keep the gossip to yourself, or at least confined to whatever Macross-related communities that play host to the micro-drama. Pretty poor form to do it in response to an article celebrating the hard work that went into creating and realising a very long-overdue event.

__

Lovely write-up, and quite fascinating. As with most, I felt Frontier was pretty much peak Macross with Kanno turning what could have been another mac7 (all love for Fire Bomber but it wasn't exactly a GREAT series) into something really special. I remember how awesome it was to hear MacF songs live at her Tanabata Sonic gig in 2009, and hoped, someday, some of that same energy could be legally shared with Western fans. Smile

I hope you're aware tons of anime and Japanese cinema directors are inspired by Hollywood movies which are popular in Japan.

As a follow-on to that, I felt the article only sort of implied what 'profanity' meant. Isolated, the statement seems prudish (especially to an American ear, where sometimes 'damn' is considered profane, while we Australians don't quite...get the concept of linguistic profanity really), but when you read on, you see that 'no profanity' in this context means you will see some 'crap' and 'damn' and at least one 'shit'. So, PG-13 friendly. After all, Transformers The Movie had one fairly famous 'shit' that blew our minds at the time. (how to say you're Gen X without saying it...)

As far as I'm concerned, that's perfectly fine for Macross in terms of tone and target audience. I wouldn't see that and go, 'wow, they really sanitised this' (as I sometimes feel when I see nerf-level subs on otherwise violent AF shows on Crunchy). The vast majority of Japanese swearing has PG or even G rated analogues, so it's not like they've subbed a Tarantino flick with stuff like 'Say what again, mother hugger'.

LoL, yeah I try to pretend that Delta doesn't exist.

It's fun to treat Delta like a misbegotten goat-spawn to Frontier's magnificent albatross but people would do well to acknowledge that without Delta putting Macross back onto the charts, you likely wouldn't have efforts to get Macross of any nature back into the Western sphere to begin with.

A necessary lawful-evil, if you will.

Besides, Delta gave us JUNNA and she's effin' amazing.

Shit, Delta wasn't THAT bad but I don't think that it was intended to be as grand as Frontier was. Delta is still pretty entertaining taken on it's own merits.

I remember seeing a reviewer (on YouTube?) saying that the vast majority of episodes of Cowboy Bebop were homages to various Hollywood genres. It explained a lot, to me, about the series that I did not understand at the time.
