Is it really that surprising? Japan is pretty damn conservative (even moreso than the US right now), and almost every piece of fiction pushes their purity culture nonsense. There's a reason people joke about how lewd anime girls are when they touch another person's hands. This is just the logical end result.

Exactly. Idols are born of this obsession and thrive in it, like Hirano did (although their producers/managers are the ones benefiting from it obviously), until something bad happens. Must admit I myself glanced at a 12-15 years old open air junior idols concert once while strolling Nagoya central park, wondering what kind of people could watch this, and judging by the looks of spectators, most of them where 40+ men, so you know...

The whole industry is rotten. It deliberately creates an illusion of intimacy, like those contemptible hand-shaking events.
But I want to remind people that the boyband idols also suffer abuse and threats. It's rotten all around.

Male idols do get threats, but there is a lot of documentation that suggests female idols are far more scrutinized disproportionately in comparison.

Because sexual liberation and Women's Rights have always been left-wing causes, while conservatism protects traditional patriarchal norms and promotes things like abstinence-only sex education, purity culture, etc.
