I, too, am anxious to see what Toriyama's final contributions to Dragon Quest will be. Seems like each game introduces at least one new monster design I can't help but fall in love with... in X, that was -- of course -- the spoiler[Ham Shamwitch.]

A big part of what makes DQ games so, well, fun, is the humor -- and a lot of that humor comes from the monster designs (and how they're animated). I, too, am sure that the series will continue long after we're all dead, but I have a hard time imagining it without Toriyama's signature flair.

God knows plenty of other artists have tried their hands at emulating Toriyama's style -- as we've seen so much of, so recently, with Super -- but I don't think any of them have really been able to rise above mere imitation.

Regarding Dr. Slump

There was a DVD release of the first five movies by Discotek in 2014 but there had been conflicting reports on that set's sales. A year after it's release, Brady Hartel said at the Kanzenshuu forums that it may have sold well but then David Miranda a few years ago at the Blu-ray forums said that it did poorly with that being the reason they never got more of the series.

As for a remake, it did get one in 1997 after Dragon Ball GT ended and it was streamed English subbed and Spanish dubbed on Tubi for a little bit before getting removed a few months back.

I thought it was the adventure of playing as a hero setting out to vanquish the evil power threatening the world especially as the humor is at times painfully divisive.

Nah, "hero setting out to vanquish the evil power" describes nearly every JRPG ever made. It's literally the trope about the genre. DQ stands out due to its atmosphere, which includes the art style and humor, and they're nearly universally praised.

Nobody wants to see their work ruined but I feel like a lot of artists who spent a big chunk of their life on a project intended to have a conclusion would rather see them finished by appropriate people than left forever incomplete.

Of course, there’s a difference between finishing something and milking it for eternity (although in Toriyama’s case it seems like he might not have been too bothered by other people eternally milking his former creations).

Anyway, I like Toriyama’s style and am grateful for a bunch of things including his work on Chrono Trigger. I preferred a lot of the earlier Dragonball stuff to later Dragonball Z stuff so it would be nice if Daima recaptured some of that. Looking forward to checking out SandLand either way.

I've been watching SandLand and honestly, it recaptures some of that old Dragonball magic. As for your comment on artists seeing their project concluded before passing away, I was wondering if we know what Toriyama thought about the SandLand film/series adaptation?

And yes, bring on Dragon Quest XII -- it's easily my most anticipated upcoming JRPG, and I have no doubt that it will be a fitting swansong, if that's the right term for the context.

My biggest problem with Dragon Quest: Your Story was it lacked Toriyama's distinct style. Even the Slime looked like an off-brand depiction of them. Kind of like how the Mario movie looked just different enough from the typical Mario renders that it was uncanny.

Dragon Quest will have to survive with Toriyama now like it had to without Sugiyama, and so long as Yuji Horii is involved I think it should continue. After that? Well, I suppose they can go a new direction as it's not like Sakaguchi is involved with every Final Fantasy these days, but those are some big shoes to fill.

Pretty sure that it also a common premise with the main Dragon Quest games with the first game notable for letting you align yourself with the main villain.

But I digress
