In episode 5, Ambassador Horikawa, the unequal treaty, Boshin War, and Shogunate government are references to the Meiji Restoration. In this episode, Horikawa travels to London to renegotiate an unequal treaty between Japan and Albion. During their Control meeting, 7 reveals that the assassin, Jubei Todo, single-handedly infiltrated and sank a warship during the Boshin War. Later, Horikawa calls Jūbei a remnant of the Shogunate government. The Japan-Albion treaty is a reference to the historical Harris Treaty (1858). This treaty marked Japan's official opening to foreign trade. It was also a major trigger for the Boshin War, a civil war between Shogunate and Imperial factions. The Imperial forces prevailed and formed a parliamentary government under Emperor Meiji. The original treaty heavily favored U.S. interests. So, in 1871, government-appointed ambassador Tomomi Iwakura led a diplomatic mission to negotiate for more balanced terms.
