'Higurashi' Written on Windows of Vandalized Middle School in Tochigi

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

A teacher at Ogawa Junior High School in Nakagawa, Tochigi found a disturbing sight when he reported to work on Wednesday. Upon walking onto campus at 5:40 a.m., he discovered 12 glass doors at the entrance to the shoe rack were broken and the word "Higurashi" written in red spray paint across the windows in the staff room. He called 110 (the police emergency number in Japan) to notify authorities.

The spray paint is a possible reference to 07th Expansion's Higurashi no Naku Koro ni visual novels and subsequent anime and manga. In the story, Rena Ryūgū is revealed to have smashed the windows of her previous school with a baseball bat. The character's use of an ax weapon also led to stations preempting the 12th episode of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai during its original airing after a 16-year-old girl murdered her father with a similar weapon in his sleep.

The vandalism is not the first of its kind in recent news. A junior high school in a neighboring city, approximately nine kilometers away, had 64 of its glass doors damaged in the last two weeks. Police are currently investigating if the incidents are related.
