ABe Develops Desperant Anime with Lain Staffers (Updated)

posted on by Egan Loo
Project discussed at April's Sakura-Con before planned May unveiling in Japan

Manga creator and character designer Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei) revealed at Washington state's Sakura-Con 2009 last month that he is developing a new anime called Desperant (デスペラント), but he added that the project will not be made public in Japan until around May 20. ABe is working with many of the same staffers with whom he created Lain. The new project's story is set in Japan's Taishō era about a century ago. Since the project has not been officially unveiled in Japan, ABe did not detail the story further, but he did present an imageboard drawing and sample work from the project.

Update: In a Thursday blog entry, ABe confirmed the reports, but clarified that the correct title for the project is Despera (ですぺら), which is derived from the shortened version of the term "desperado." He acknowledged that he was speaking fast at the event in Seattle, so his words may have come across jumbled. Thanks, ChancellorOfTheExchequer and Diego Coruña.
