Summer Wars' Mamoru Hosoda Plans Next Film About Siblings in 2018

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time/Wolf Children director teases next film after The Boy & the Beast

Mamoru Hosoda, the director of such critically and financially successful anime movies as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, is planning to release his new film in 2018. He indicated in an Associated Press interview that after dealing with motherhood in Wolf Children and fatherhood in last year's The Boy and The Beast, he will address "siblings" as the theme of his next film.

The director established Studio Chizu in 2011 to produce Wolf Children and The Boy and The Beast. Last year, Tokyo International Film Festival awarded him an "Arigatō" (Thank You) Award for contributions to the Japanese film industry. This year, the festival is holding a retrospective of his work from the early television episodes he helmed to The Boy and The Beast.

The Boy and The Beast debuted at #1 in the Japanese box-office in July 2015 and earned 667,035,100 yen (about US$5.4 million) in its first two days. It eventually surpassed the total box office earnings of Hosoda's previous film, Wolf Children. The film was the second-highest grossing domestic film in Japan in 2015.
