I started reading Phoenix, and in the first volume on page 160, we see a set of sextuplets who mostly share the faces of the brothers in Osomatsu (one is unrecognizable, but the others match). I checked the copyright date, and Phoenix started in 1954, so it predates Osomatsu-kun by nearly a decade.
Are the Osomatsu brothers a reference to this, or something else?
The panel had the text "We're not the Osmonds" though that has to be a localization thing, as they weren't active until 1970. Were the character designs originally lifted from something else?

I think I got it flipped. Phoenix properly started in 1967, the same time the Osomatsu-kun TV series was airing, so the manga is referencing Osomatsu-kun. The chapters of Phoenix in the 50s were prior to the series really taking off.
